Jeremejevite was first discovered in Siberia at the end of the 19th century. Gem quality crystals have also been discovered in Burma (Myanmar and Namibia but in very limited amounts. Jeremejevite gemstones are light blue in colour and captivatingly beautiful, however the minute quantities in which they are mined are why most people have never heard of them.
3. Poudretteite
Poudretteite was first discovered in the 1960s, in Mont St. Hilaire, in Quebec, Canada. The Poudretteite was named after the Canadian family that operated the quarry. The first gem quality gemstone was found in Burma, in the year 2000 – a 9.41-carat beauty that is currently exhibited in the Smithsonian Museum. Other Poudretteite gemstones that are larger than 1 carat and are of gem-quality are exceptionally rare.
4. Grandidierite
Grandidierite Is Magnesium Aluminum Borosilicate that was first discovered in southern Madagascar in 1902. It is named after naturalist and explorer Alfred Grandidier, one of the first authorities on the natural history of Madagascar. Grandidierite has a hardness of 7 to 7.5 and displays an attractive blue green hue. gem material is extremely rare and transparent specimens are prized by collectors.
5. Serendibite
Was first found in Sri Lanka, the name derives from the Arabic name for Sri Lanka. At one time only 3 small faceted less than 1 carat stones were known to exist. Two of them were purchased by the late Edward Gubelin. In 2005 a deposit was found in Mogok, Myanmar, (Burma) and this rare gem is now available to collectors.
6. Taaffeite
Edward Charles Richard Taaffe a gemmologist bought a box of cut stones from a jeweller in Dublin in the 1940s. He thought he had purchased a collection of Spinel’s but on closer inspection he saw that one of the mauve gems was not reacting to the light in the same way as the rest of the Spinels so he sent it off to be tested. The results revealed that he had discovered an unknown gemstone serendipitous. He had discovered a new cut gem but had no idea where the mineral naturally occurred. Once the new stone had been announced, many other collectors re-examined their own spinel collections and a number of other samples were uncovered. The source of the stone was tracked down to Sri Lanka, although a handful have also been found in Myanmar (Burma,) Tanzania and China.
