Many Americans like to do DIY projects, as it has numerous benefits. Not only is it good for your wellbeing, but it can also help you save a few bucks here and there.

Maybe you want to learn to solder since that opens up the door to many more fixes.

Do you want to learn this new skill but don’t know where to begin? Then keep reading. In this article, we’ll show you some solder techniques and tips for beginners.

    Get the Right Tools

Before you can even learn how to solder, you should first make sure that you have all the right tools first. After all, you can’t get the job done right if you don’t have the right equipment!

You’ll probably want to start with hand soldering, so here are the things you need:

    • Soldering iron
    • Desoldering pump
    • Side cutters
    • Tip cleaner
    • Soldering iron stand

Some other things that might help you out during DIY projects include a vice, solder wick, and flux.

    How to Start

Whenever you’re not using your soldering iron, you need to put it into the stand. That way, you ensure that the tip doesn’t touch anything. You should also use the stand when you’re heating up the iron.

If the iron is one that’s been used before, you need to remove old solder from it once it heats up. Wipe it with a wet sponge or cloth.

Once it’s clean, you need to tin the tip before you start the job. This is just melting new solder onto it.

How to Solder 2 Wires Together

To solder 2 wires together, you’ll want to tin both of the wires. Because the wires will get hot, we recommend holding onto them with tweezers to avoid burning your hands.

Once tinned, put the wires together and heat with the soldering iron to melt them together.

How to Solder Components on a Circuit Board

First, put the components in place. Bend the wire legs so that the components will stay in place when you turn the circuit board around.

When soldering the components, you’ll want to place the iron so it touches both the wire legs and the circuit board pad. After heating the area for a second, then add solder.

Remove the tip from the joint. If you’ve done the soldering correctly, then the join should look like a cone.

Cut the component lead from the solder joint, but make sure you don’t cut it too short. Leaving a proper length can make it easier for desoldering in the future if needed.

Try These Solder Techniques for Beginners

If you want to learn a new skill, soldering is definitely a useful one. Now you have some solder techniques and tips under your belt, so put them to good use. Before you know it, you’ll be a soldering pro!
