    What is a Swollen Eyelid?

    Swollen eyelid is swelling of either upper or both the lower eyelids. In the connective tissue around the eye, inflammation or a fluid build-up causes swollen eyelids. Swollen eyelids condition at times can affect both the lower and upper eyelids; at times, it may or may not be a painful experience. 

    Swollen eyelids should be consulted with a physician or eye specialist immediately because a minor eyelid issue could be a sign of a critical health problem leading to a vision loss. Subsequently, in some conditions, there is no severe medical health problem. Instead, people want to treat the monolid. Double-eyelid surgery comes into play in such cases, where a cosmetic surgery procedure to increase the space between lower and upper lids takes place for enhancement of an eye. 

    14 Causes of Swollen Eyelids

    There are 14 major causes of swollen eyelids, which would help you in identifying which was the cause of your swollen eyelids.

    1. Allergies

    Allergic reactions, dust, pollen can also cause an eye allergy. It would make itchy, watery and red-eye leading to a swollen eyelid which could be irritating at times. Benadryl could be effective for allergies.

    2. Exhaustion

    Exhaustion can result in a swollen and puffy eye. Fatigue could be caused by lack of sleep, and water retention overnight gives a look of swollen eyes.

    3. Eyelid Irritation

    Eyelid irritation would cause water discharge leading up to the painful itching and swollen eyes formation.

    4. Chalazion

    A chalazion occurs when an oil gland in the eyelid gets clogged, this reflectionless eye disease could result in the formation of a large bump on the eye. A bump can get painful hence causing an eye to a significant swell.

    5. Conjunctivitis

    Conjunctivitis is an infection of the conjunctiva, which is the smooth, shiny, translucent membrane on the sclera. It could cause read and swelling eyes.

    6. Stye

    Stye exists in a gland of an eyelid; this infection could cause a tear in the eye glands. It could begin as swollen or red painful bumps in the eyelid.

    7. Cosmetics

    Cosmetics such as skin care products and makeup could make eyes irritated, leading to a red, painful mess that would cause swollen eyes.

    8. Blepharitis

    Blepharitis is a condition caused by bacteria around eyelids; this painful chronic condition could be a cause of swollen eyes.

    9. Facial, Nose or Eyelid Surgery

    Facial, nose or eyelid surgery could cause a red and painful swelling around the eyes due to the connection with the eyes. Hence causing a swollen eye formation.

    10. Crying

    Crying could be the result of fluid retention, causing augmentation of blood flow around eyes hence causing puffy eyes.

    11. Light Sensitivity

    Light sensitivity could create irritation and redness of eyes which would make eyes swell.

    12. Eye Discharge

    Eye discharge could lead to dryness and irritation in the eyes. Hence leading up to the red swollen eyes.

    13. Graves’ Disease

    Graves’ disease is caused by an overactive thyroid. Moreover, such cases could mistakenly discharge cells to fight absent infection in the eyes, hence an inflammation and swelling of an eye.

    14. Orbital Cellulitis

    Orbital cellulitis happens around the tissue of an eyelid, a deep infection causing painful experience.
